Welcome Students and Families
I am pleased that you will be joining me in Teacher Cadet this semester.
Course Goal
The primary goal of the Teacher Cadet Program is to encourage academically talented, high-achieving, high school students with exemplary interpersonal and leadership skills to consider teaching as a career. Teacher Cadet I and II introduces students to the field of education. You will be introduced to the science of learning, the role of the learner, professional expectations and responsibilities of the teacher as well as presenting global perspective of education systems past, present, and future.
The Teacher Cadet Program will provide insight into the nature of teaching, the problems of schooling, and the critical issues affecting the quality of education in America's Schools. Cadets will receive classroom experience where they observe a teacher, assisting in an actual elementary, middle, and high school classroom. Teacher Cadet II is more of an "internship" where the students are in an actual "field placement" 3 and 4 days per week and only in the class with instruction 1-2 days per week. Cadets will develop a portfolio that chronicles their experiences. Teacher Cadet I and II are honors level classes.
Core Course Requirements:
- Students will experience lecture, discovery, discussion, digitally enhanced lessons, role-playing, problem solving, decision making, simulation, debate, and observation activities in order to expose Cadets to different methods of teaching.
- Students will observe and participate in public school classrooms at the elementary, middle/junior high, and secondary levels in order to collect data concerning the school environment.
- Students will learn about various personnel in the educational system and their responsibilities (superintendent, school level administration, instructional facilitators, school board members, guidance counselors, psychologists, various therapists, etc.)
